He grew up in Asheboro, North Carolina. In High School, he began singing with various bands at local clubs, simultaneously teaching himself to play guitar and piano. Shortly after graduation, Lane packed his bags and set out for Los Angeles with the hopes of making a name for himself in the music industry. This lead to Lane’s first single on Liberty Records (Call me back to Denver). He joined the group, “Skyband” with co-members Steve Kipner and Peter Beckett. They opened for legendary performers such as Peter Noone, Herman’s Hermits, and The Jackson 5. Singing led to acting in both feature films and in television. Later Lane moved to Nashville where he was signed to another recording contract resulting in charted singles and being honored as one of the top 5-indie male vocalists of 1989. Lane is a principal in Cauley Music Group.
